Singapore Airlines was founded on May 1 1947 and commenced operations on October 1 1972. It is the Republic of Singapore's flag carrier, and its hub is located at the Singapore Changi Airport. The airline company is notable for highlighting the Singapore Girl as its central figure in the corporate branding segment. It has also been ranked as World's best airline by Skytrax around four times.
This Airlines group has more than 20 subsidiaries, including the numerous airline-related subsidiaries. The SIA Engineering Company handles the maintenance, overall business and repairs across nine countries with a portfolio of 27 joint ventures, including Rolls-Royce, Boeing and Singapore Airlines Cargo. It was the first airline company to put the Airbus A380 and ranks amongst the top 15 carriers worldwide in revenue passenger kilometers. It is ranked tenth in the world for the number of international passengers. This airline company was voted Skytrax World's Best Airline Cabin Crew 2019. This Airline Company has also won the second and the fourth positions as the World's best airline and the World's cleanest airline in the year 2019.
Corporate affairs
The airline company is majority-owned by the Singapore government investment and the holding company Temasek Holdings which merely held 55% of the voting stock as of March 31 2020.
The government holds a golden share via the country's Ministry of Finance. Minister Mentor Lee Kuan Yew emphasized the point which said that the Singapore Changi Airport's front-runner status as an aviation hub is more important than the SIA. He was also personally involved in easing the tensions between the company and its pilots in the early 2000s. The airline company is headquartered at the Airlie House, a hangar at the Changi airport in Singapore.
Branding
The flight crew made branding and efforts in contrast to most airlines out there which tend to emphasize the aircraft and services in general. They also emphasized the promotion of the female flight attendants known as the Singapore girls, and the Singapore Airlines logo is a bird which is inspired by a dagger featured in regional folklore known as the Silver kris.
Destinations
The airline company flies to 75 destinations and in 32 countries on five continents from the primary hub in Singapore. The Asian financial crisis happened in 1997 and the Singapore airlines discontinued its routes to Berlin, Darwin, Cairns, Kagoshima, Sendai and Hangzhou. Toronto city also got discontinued in 1994.
The SARS outbreak happened in 2003-04 and Singapore Airlines ceased flights to Las Vegas, Chicago, Mauritius, Vienna, Madrid, Shenzhen, Surabaya and Brussels. The airline company also operated two of the longest flights in the World. The nonstop flights from Singapore to LA and Newark with Airbus 1340-500 aircraft. Nonstop service to LA was terminated on October 20 2013, and the nonstop service to Newark was terminated on November 23 2013.
Singapore Airlines also operated flights between Singapore and Wellington via Canberra until May 2018. Then, the intermediate stop was also changed to Melbourne. This route was known as the Capital Express.
Singapore airlines have also taken advantage of the liberal bilateral aviation agreements between Thailand and Singapore. It also included UAE and offered more onward connections from Bangkok and Dubai.
AirAsia, a low-cost airline company, based in Malaysia accused Singapore airlines of double standards. It also claimed that the Government of Singapore attempted to keep it out of the Singapore market. Singapore airlines announced its plans to resume the World's longest non-stop flight on October 14 2015, between Singapore and New York.
Fleet
The airline company operates a fleet of 148 Airbus and Boeing passenger aircraft. It also operates nine freighters. The average passenger aircraft age also stands 5 years and 11 months as of April 1 2020.
