Spirit Airlines is a low-fare, ultra-low-cost airline which operates scheduled flights throughout the United States, America, South America and Mexico. This primary low-cost U.S. carrier is headquartered in Miramar, Florida. It operates several scheduled flights throughout the United States of America, Latin America and the Caribbean. This company was the eighth-largest passenger carrier in North America as of 2020.

Jetblue offered to acquire spirit for US$3.8 billion on July 9 2022. A majority of the shareholders approved the deal. However, this offer awaits approval the government regulators.

Establishment

The company started in the year 1964 as Clippert Trucking Company. In 1974, the company changed its name to Ground Air transfer.

2020’s

Due to Covid pandemic in 2020, the airline received roughly $334 million in aid in the form of grants.The money was used for funding the employees until September 30. In July, the company also announced that it would put around 20-30% of the employees on leave in October.

Some pilots and the flight attendants agreed to take leave voluntarily to avoid layoffs.

Spirit Airline announced its intention to be acquired by the Frontier Airlines on February 7.

Headquarters

The airline company has headquarters at 2800 executive way, Miramar, Florida. In the year 2019, Spirit airline announced that it would move to the new headquarters of up to 500,000 square feet in Daine Pointe Development in Dania Beach, Florida. The airline expects to house 1000 employees.

Business model

The CEO of Spirit Airlines is Ben Baldanza. The airline company started following a fare model involving charging for the amenities, often included in the base ticket price. The passengers who wanted to customize their itinerary or seat selection had to pay an add-on fee for each additional feature. This enabled the carrier to earn more than 40% of the total revenue. It also included the agent print on a boarding pass at the check-in.

Current fleet

Since December 2022, Spirit Airlines operate an all-A320 and all-A320neo family fleet. The February 2020 fleet plan outlined around 293 aircrafts planned by 2027. However, an order of around 100 additional aircraft with 50 options was announced in 2019.

Frequent flyer program

The Frequent-flyer program of Spirit airlines is called Free Spirit. It has a three-tier frequent flyer status program. The tiers are Free Spirit Member silver and gold.
