The Turkish Airline Company is the national flag carrier airline company of Turkey. As of 2022, the airline operates scheduled services to around 340 destinations all over Asia, Europe, America and Africa. Thus, this makes it the largest mainline carrier in the entire world by the total number of passenger destinations.

This airline company was founded on 20 May 1993. The hub of the airline company is Istanbul Airport. It flies to 126 countries. It has an operational fleet of 24 cargo aircraft. The cargo division of the airline serves around 82 destinations. The corporate headquarters are at the Turkish Airlines General Management Building. The Istanbul Airport in Amavutkoy is the main base of the airline. The secondary hubs of the airline company are Ankara and Izmir. This airline company has been a member of Star Alliance network since 1 April 2008.

History

This airline company was established on 20 May 1993 as Turkish State Airlines. Turkish airlines initial fleet consisted of two five-seat Curtiss Kingbirds and two four-seat Junkers. This airline was turned over to Ministry of Public Works in 1935. It was then renamed General Directorate of State Airlines. In 1938, the airline became a part of the Ministry of Transportation.

Postwar Period

The airline company was set up as a domestic carrier and commenced all international services with the inauguration of Ankara-Istanbul-Athens flights in 1947.

Beirut, Cairo and Nicosia were added to the international flight destination of the airlines. The airline's domestic services remained the primary focus on the carrier until the early 1960s.

The Turkish Government reorganized the airline under Turk HavaYollari A.O. in 1956. The airline also joined the International Airways Transport Association. In 1957, the British Overseas Airways Corporation started supplying technical support after they acquired a 6.5 % stakeholding. They held the holding for about 20 years.

The Turkish airline also began operating its first jet in the year 1967. The name of this jet was McDonnell Douglas DC-9. This jet was followed by the addition of 3 Boeing 707 jets in the year 1971.

1980s and 1990s.

Issues plagued this airline company in the 1980s and 1990s. It also developed a poor reputation for poor service compared to the competitors and the flight delays. 47 out of 100 flights departed on time. It also endured hijackings and several accidents between 1974 and 1983.

The most dangerous accident was the 1974 crash of the Turkish Airlines Flight 981. In this crash, an aircraft design flaw resulted into a faulty cargo door breaking off on a flight near France. It resulted in the death of 346 people.

A new government came into action in the year 1983. World security was intensified, and it also caused on the shipper to compare it to Israel's EL AL in terms of the delays.

The THY airline was capable of light and heavy maintenance on many aircraft types. The technical staff made up one-quarter of the 6000 employees of the airline. In the year 1984, the company's capital was raised to nearly 60 billion TL. It was also classified as a state economic enterprise. Three years later, the capital again got raised to 150 Billion TL.

By the mid-1980s, THY had a fleet of around 30 aircrafts. The Airline Company was flying three million passengers a year to 16 domestic destinations and almost three dozen international ones. The airline company y proved to be the largest source of the foreign currency of the country.

The airline company suffered a lot in the global aviation crisis following Persian Gulf War. Nevertheless, the business again started booming in the mid-1990s. The greatest growth came from the North American destinations.

The company's capital reached 10 trillion TL in 1995. The country underwent an economic-crisis in 2001, which lead to a reduction in traffic on the domestic routes.

Fleet

The Turkish Airlines operates a fleet of 388 aircraft as of August 2022. It consists of around 13 passenger aircrafts. The Turkish Airline Company started its operations in 1933 with five aircraft. It ultimately grew to 52 in 1945. It made the Turkish Airlines the largest carrier in the entire Middle East. The first jet-engined aircraft of this airline was Douglas DC-9. This aircraft joined the fleet in 1967. The airline also made major changes to its fleet development in the late 1980s. Boeing 737s arrived a few days later.

Throughout the year 2004, the airways ordered over 50 aircraft from Airbus and Boeing. It later ordered 12 more from the Boeing.

Frequent flyer program

The frequent-flyer program of Turkish Airlines is the Miles and Smiles program. This program got inaugurated in 2000.
